Joyce McCarten

Every canvas is a journey all its own. I approach art intuitively as well as intellectually, drawing inspiration where I may find it. Years of outdoor landscape painting and figure drawing have given me a rich painting vocabulary, but in the end, the paintings come through observation, interpretation, experimentation and pure imagination.

My abstract paintings are always inspired by the places I have visited, or the objects I love, or the people I meet. My representational landscapes and figures always have an element of the abstract.

The process of painting, like life, can go slowly and at times seems frustrating. Some paintings are made quickly and some take months. All of the paintings are born from a lot of work and a lot of waiting. What is always needed is faith and the vision to see beyond the immediate circumstances and my own limited perceptions. Waiting for the larger vision can be a challenge in an age of instant gratification. The process, however, has its rewards. The paintings become more than I could have imagined, but exactly what I wanted to say.
