A long time ago, in a village far, far away, I was taught to draw by my Great Aunt Amanda. She gave me pictures of birds, and told me to sketch them. She liked what I did (or so she said). So did I. Since then, birds have occasionally appeared in my artworks in many different guises.
Now, for the first time, I present a collection of artworks featuring only birds -- more than 100 paintings, drawings, and prints. Mostly imaginary, these sometimes representational, sometimes abstract birds convey the many feelings -- sexiness, loneliness, cockiness, joy, anger, curiosity and more -- that their actual counterparts seem to display. I'm certain that Aunt Amanda did not foresee this outcome, but nonetheless, the artworks of A Little Aviary of Sex and Miscellany are a tribute to her. A companion to the Little Aviary is an Abcedarium, an alphabet of verses by my collaborator, John Martin Tarrat. Each couplet, representing the letters of the alphabet, is accompanied by one of my imaginary birds. The result is a limited-edition folio of 30-plus pages. |
