DREAMTIME: reveries in sculpture and drawing
In this installation I draw on two meanings of "dreaming". As a state of lowered consciousness, what the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard calls reverie, when we can enter intimate spaces that are submerged in memory and the subconscious. If we are open minded like a child, we can daydream in these spaces and let wonderful associations unfold. Also, as the infinite spiritual cycle, encompassing the past, present and future, the set of beliefs guiding the Australian Aborigines in ensuring the continuity of their life and land. I "dreamt" about concepts that fascinate me: our place in the cycles of renewal, and the origin of the world. My forms of breasts and seeds developed through leaps of free association, from real forms that sustain life towards abstraction. Some of the works were conceived during a Fellowship at the Virginia Center for the Arts (VCCA) at Amherst, VA. |
