JO LEVINE
Artist Statement
I take photographs because I can’t not. I am always scanning my surroundings, and when I see something intriguing, I feel compelled to capture and preserve it. I photograph whatever delights my eye – usually parts of buildings, trees, leaves, and flowers. I am inevitably drawn to small details – the elements that transform ordinary scenes into abstract designs.
Much of my recent photography takes place in my studio, primarily with found natural materials – leaves, twigs, bark, flowers, and stones – which I set against a black background, dramatically lit from the side. The process of choosing, arranging, and illuminating my subjects allows for exploration, imagination, and even a sense of play.
My photos can be ordered in other sizes in addition to the dimensions listed. Please contact the gallery if you are interested.
