Inspiration
These paintings were inspired by a photograph I took in Oregon at the Columbia River Gorge.
I had made several paintings from these photographs, but then found one that impressed me with its rhythms—movement, color, shapes.
So I tore it up and pasted pieces on a primed canvas and followed the rhythms with paint. One inspired the next and so on.

My paintings are primarily about the sensuality of paint. I use different types of paint, mainly oil and latex and additives, to explore interactions. Because of the textural quality of my work, I love it when people ask if they can touch my paintings.

A mathematician and a chemist walk into a gallery...
They decide to make art by sharing pages from their doctoral dissertations.
Freda Lee-McCann is a theoretical mathematician. Her language is equations. Langley Spurlock is an organic chemist. His language is molecular structures.
They are artists but neither understands the symbols of the other's language. The scripts in their dissertations are mutually incomprehensible.
Both artists must see beyond the meanings of symbols they do understand (as difficult as ignoring the meanings of words you can read), and those they don't (somewhat easier to do), in order to appreciate their designs. In meeting this challenge they create a new, shared language with symbols expressly for making art.
The works in this show celebrate the adventures of communication and collaboration between two artists with different educational backgrounds and different approaches to artistic expression.
Understanding their meaning only requires doing what the artists themselves did — accepting the images and their symbols as displays of a newly learned language.
